Literacy

We are continuing our work in Unit 4 of Literacy! We are working on the Unit 4 sight words. This week I introduced the sight word: that. We are also working on short vowel sounds, segmenting, blending, and ending sounds. We are now working again on informational writing during our whole group writing time and are continuing to discuss how to fill out a T-chart. This week we started a new information book called, Making Music. This week for writing we are writing about different musical instruments from around the world. During reading rotations we are continuing to talk about narrative writing!

Math

We are now in our Unit 5 of Math! We are counting on our number chart everyday and also counting our straws. We talk about how many straws are in the tens and ones place, and how we bundle them when we get to a set of ten. This week we talked about length and how we use the words long and short to describe the length of something. We have been working on comparing two objects and deciding which one is longer and which one is shorter. We also talked about when we are comparing two objects by length that we have to line them up. We did a fun activity called a number scoot, where we went around the classroom with a marker and had to figure out if our marker was longer or shorter than an object. This is an activity you can do at home with your child as well! Have them take an object such as their toothbrush or a pencil and walk around the house lining it up with other objects. Have them tell you a sentence about what they discover. For example, if their toothbrush is longer than an object encourage them to say, "My toothbrush is longer than _______.

Science

We continued our unit of weather this week! This week we talked about different types of storms. One type of storm we talked about this week was thunderstorms. We learned that thunderstorms have lightning, thunder, and that it is not safe to be outside during a thunderstorm. We are really enjoying learning about the different types of storm that can happen! Next week we will be talking about tornadoes and hurricanes.
